For every product that we buy, must have tax. Of course hybrid car have a hybrid tax too. One of the big incentives to buying a hybrid is the Federal Tax Credit that rewards you for your ‘green efforts.’ The reason why the Federal government suddenly became so generous is because of the higher prices that hybrid tax buyers were faced with. Especially since our Japanese friends out-engineered us shortly after President Clinton commissioned the hybrid-electric car program back in 1993.

Japan’s total domination of hybrid car technology resulted in the complete withdrawal of U.S. auto manufacturers from the hybrid car program by 2001. Ford and a couple other Detroit automakers were quietly making deals with Toyota to license their technology. The bigger the gas savings, the bigger the tax credit.

The government has decided that encouraging drivers to do their part to protect the environment could be better enhanced by offering hybrid tax incentives. So 2006 sees a variety of incentives from tax credits to tax deductions. It is a bit complex and not all vehicles that call themseleves hybrids actually qualify for the hybrid tax relief programs.

The hybrid vehicle tax credit begins to phase out when a manufacturer sells 60,000 qualifying vehicles. Check with your dealer, but as of this writing most of these credits are 25% of the original amount. The purpose of these tax cuts was designed to stimulate consumer purchase of hybrid vehicles. While we expect some level of hybrid tax incentive to remain, we also predict the amounts will lessen over time.
